Manchester 1993 - a drowning man recalls his life as it slips away. Private detective Tom Renfield works for the AndTom Detective Agency, a partnership between himself and an old friend, Andi. They are both graduates who might be better employed in a very different line of work. 
 
Renfield’s uneventful life takes a turn for the bizarre when he’s hired by a professor to find a missing student, Rebecca Morney. Through the course of his investigations, Renfield searches the campus and travels to the East Coast to seek the truth of the disappearance. 
 
The novel is interposed by flashes from the moment of Renfield’s death and his handling of the case as an experience of being completely out of his depth.
